Immortal City by Scott Speer

Goodreads Summery : Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He's days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone's obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect - everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy's the one girl in Angel City who doesn't breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn't recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson.

My Rating : 4 of 5 stars

My Thoughts : There always have been a debate in support or against the statement that a celebrity can write or not, and most answers were used to be no, as we have previously witnessed some horrible piece came of out of celebrities’ unthinkable thoughts which doesn’t even falls in the category of literature. This time a celebrity came in field of young adult literature and conquers all conventional conception of that has been running around. Yes, I’m talking about Scott Speer and his YA incredible debut Immortal City. He adopted the conventional concept of guardian angels and delivers it with own idea of celebrity glamour. He took the practical idea how we common peoples are drooling over celebrities and he simply applied this in his novel.

A Look on Angel City

Guardian angels are ultimate celebrities; they are ambassadors of commercials and brands, faces on magazines and news. They are extremely costly, hiring them is definitely not possible for a common people, and only wealthy families of Angel City can appoint them as their guardian angel. Jackson is hottest of all angels, a rising superstar, girls worship him, on the other hand Maddy is probably the only girl who doesn’t love angels blindly, and she is not even bothered about them. Hence, Jackson and Maddy met, romance is fueled and takes off to fly.
When guardian angels are being killed one by one, their wings were found beside their stars on Angel City, but the bodies went missing. The suspicion falls on Jackson, only he is next in line to be murdered.
I found the third person narration of telling the story from more than one point of views, very useful of getting into the novel and also informative where the readers get to other’s minds beside the main characters. The plot has romance, action and suspense to put the readers at stake of excitement.
I love how the author portrays the characters and their development throughout the story, even if the angels seem so real. Maddy and Jackson are two completely different personalities and when their worlds collide that hit up the story. I felt so fond of Maddie, at the beginning she was extremely practical which I liked and judgmental which I didn’t, although as she gets to know Jackson she eventually changes her mind about angels. Maddie was pretty stubborn and down to earth human girl who thinks about other’s welfare, she is just a girl next door with whom you can easily relate yourself to.
Behind his superstar image, Jackson is just a real guy who patiently waits on the window to fly off with his girl or who can takes risk without caring for his life or reputation for the girl he loves. Isn’t that lovely born romantic thing?

Not a Fallen or Hush Hush

As the book progressed, suspense grows and soon we discover Maddy’s past that has a great impact on present. When the readers are close to discovering the man behind the murders, every time they though they are about to caught him, just at that moment he slipped away. The author knows how to drop bombs and when to pull the string and these small things made the book more exciting.
I literally hold my breath for last few pages and exhales when I finished the book. Immortal City is very entertaining and adventurous, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I'm very choosy about angel books and I'm not a fan of either Hush Hush or Fallen series, but I loved Immortal City and I suggest the book to those who love good angel books, even those who doesn't.
