Amarok by Angela J. Townsend
Dragged across the tundra by an evil mountain man and his enormous black wolf, she learns that love can be found in the most unexpected places. Amarok, as she's nicknamed the wolf, is a young man from the gold-rush era enslaved by an ancient shaman. Emma's gentle touch and kind heart win his love and devotion. When a vicious madman--trapped in bear form by the same Shaman--attacks the travelers and injures Amarok, Emma must find the strength to face her fears and free the wolf she's come to love. But that means she must face down the evil shaman, a Siberian mammoth hunter from the ice age, and he has no intention of giving up his power to her.
My Rating : 3.5 of 5 stars
My Thoughts : Emma life had been no less than hell since she moved from sunny California to frosty remote town of Alaska. Guilt ridden by her mother's death and abused by her step father, Emma was desperate for freedom. But when her car skids of the icy road, she was hold captive by a madman and dragged away from her desired freedom, where a big black wolf was her only friend in solitary. Tok or Amarok (as Emma named him) was actually a teenage boy cursed by a evil Shaman and trapped in wolf form. Emma's kindness and love touched him, now Emma must embark a journey to save him.
Emma was kind of character readers would easily emphasized with, strong and determine, nothing could break her spirit, not mad mountain man, not her stepfather, not even the evil Shaman. With progress of the book we explore brighter and selfless side of her character.
Caged in a body of wolf, Amarok always craved for human touch and love, what made him protective of Emma. The books slowly unravels his past as human and his life as wolf.
Only that the book was slow paced that sometime it was really hard to get into the story. The romance was kind of undeveloped, mostly what we call silent love. Amarok and Emma didn't much time together, the romance was described in unspoken feeling lingers between them.
Despite of the fact that I'm not entirely satisfied with the romance part, I must say Amarok was a heart rending story of unspoken love and sacrifice, and surviving against all odds. The book was well written in a touching way, a girl's journey against all difficulties and risking her life to save the boy she loves. Short and sweet, wrapped in sadness that will break readers heart, with an ending that will show readers a ray of hope, Amarok was a wonderful read for me which I enjoyed till the end line of the book.
