Reapers and Zombies and Ghosts … Oh, Crap! By Michele Vail

In the UNDEADLY world of Molly Bartolucci, zombies and ghosts are commonplace. People keep walking corpses and spirits around basically to have as servants or as entertainment—and not everyone has pure motives when it comes to having a zombie, or even a ghost.

Molly’s world is filled with death magic, which is intertwined with the history and mythology of Ancient Egypt. Some people are born with the ability to do necromancy, which is broken down into five aspects:

Ka Heka: Re-animate dead bodies with a part of the soul called the ka.

Ren Heka: Call forth and communicate with earth-bound spirits.

Sheut Heka: Create and command soul shadows.

Ba Heka: Bind souls and keep them from entering the afterlife.

Ib Heka: See into the heart of the soul, and know the person's true worth.

Molly is a ka heka, which is the most common necro-magic in the world. It means she can make zombies, and she does so at her dad’s business, Big Al’s Zomporium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Everyone in the modern world knows that necromancy exists. It’s just a common aspect of everyday life. What most people don’t know is that those who are born with the ability to use necro-magic are sorta primed for becoming reapers in the afterlife.

Reapers don’t kill people. They escort souls to the gates of the Underworld. Some souls are so evil, they go straight into the realms of hell. Others have so much good, they go straight into the heavens. But some need judgment, and they go into the Underworld to be judged for their deeds … at which point they’ll be released to the heavens or eaten by the creature ancient Egyptians knew as Ammit, “the gobbler.”

Molly learns about reapers and her own secret past when she turns sixteen and returns the soul of her crush, Rick, at her birthday party. She soon finds out she has a larger destiny, and she struggles with the everyday worries of being a teenager with the idea of not being in charge of her life—ever again.
